It basically means a slight improvement in the condition of the patient. Right?

Remission:

a period during which such a decrease or subsidence occurs: The patient's leukemia was in remission.

It means that the disease has been temporarily suppressed, but could flare up again.

Right. Remission isn't a slight improvement, it's a major one -- there are no more signs of the disease in that person. However, as our guest notes above, it's usually applied to chronic (or potentially) diseases rather than to ones that can be fully cured.
