Does memorization help?

Does anyone have any experience with memorizing as an aid in learning languages? Not just individual words or sentences, but whole paragraphs or sections of texts. I'm wondering whether this will help with production.

Or is it better to keep going for more input, and worry about production later?

In my experience, it can help - but it doesn't seem to help memorizing the meanings of the words. I think that it's better to learn each individual word - then you can use these words as you wish.

However, I have before tried this - and it does help to learn how words are used, and in which context.

I'm sure you're aware of the 'Look, Cover, Write, Check' method. If you do this with, say, 20 words a day - along with their definitions, then that should keep you learning at a steady pace. Then, you can write sample sentences, or talk with people to practise using them in a context.

Just a suggestion

It helped me.
