Are foreign languages popular majors in English-speaking?

I've never understood why Italian is such a popular language to study.

seriously...why do people study italian? Its such an insignificant language.

Italian is the language of classical music.

Mozart wrote in Italian.

Also is the language of fasion and design. Milan is the world capital of fashion, more than Paris and NYC. Design applicated to furniture was born in Italy in '60.

Many of my friends are music students (vocal performance especially) and they tend to favor Italian because that is the language they sing in most of the time. Not to mention, if they've had Spanish (or French to an extent) in the past, many words will look and sound familiar and/or similar. The others assume they'll be studying abroad at some point, and when you factor that in, few people choose languages that would be of use and instead opt for countries they would like to visit (which is why many students choose Italian, and why some students choose French, but then you have more practical Americans who go to Mexico City or Oaxaca).

Oh and there's huge numbers of Americans whose families came from Italian immigrants.

People seem to have some sort of strange affinity for Italian, and consider it to be an important language (for non-utilitarian reasons), while much more significant romance languages like Portuguese, are practically unknown, and not studied.

There's also the fact that it's a "beautiful" language, which in the United States (except for Louisiana and Vermont) is the only reason I think French has as many students as it does.

My first linguistics professor polled our class asking what we thought the ugliest and prettiest languages were... We came up with Spanish French and Italian as the prettiest and German Russian and Arabic as the ugliest, and then pointed out the fact that the 'prettiest' were recent allies and the 'ugliest' were recent enemies.

"Italian is the language of classical music."
Right, but it ended with the Romantic era.

"Mozart wrote in Italian"
Wrong.
Italian writers made the lyrics for his operas.

"Also is the language of fasion and design"
Absolutely wrong.

"Milan is the world capital of fashion"
and fashion speaks English first, then French, no much Italian.

"Design applicated to furniture was born in Italy in '60"
LOL.
Nobody told you it started in Scandinavia in the 20-30's?

doesn't matter what the specifics are about Italian. There's a heritatge many people liek about Italy. As someone said about, Italian is considered a beautiufl, romantic language, like French. Italy is known for renaissance, music, art, architecture, etc. It's one of those major, European countries we owe a lot to. So learning Italian is not just about it's beauty, or even anything about practicality, but simply if someone likes Italy in general, Italian stuff, so they learn the language too. It's like how people interested in Anime tend to want to learn Japanese, also cuase they'll get some practice from... well, anime, duh. People tend to learn the language of a culture they like. My french teacher learnd French cause she was always big on French fashion and cuisine.

back on topic, i dunno, i'm at Penn State York, I don't know ANYONE majoring in a language. Seriously. They take language CLASSES for credits, or for humanities, internation credits, or elective, but i don't personalyl know anything majoring or even minoring in a language, even though Ive talked to tons of people like, all sorts of people. I could be lying though... 1 or 2 were possible minoring in a language.

I don't see how it would be popular; unless you're going into... I don't know, translation or a liason or something... i'm a bit ignorant here, not sure what a major in a language would get you, but, I'd think most people would have to major in a langage as well as some other major, or focus on another major and make language a minor.

and then of course, people in english speaking countries feel they don't need to know another language. They think'll just stay here, or think the country will remain superpower and successful, I dunno.
