French Liaisons

How exactly do you know when to liaison words together in French? In the past, all my French teacher said was that there are no set rules and it'll come to me in time.

Ex: C'est une cuisine

Is it "say-une-kwee-zeen" or "say-tune-kwee-zeen?"

-- You can say both. But the liaison makes the sentence a little ceremonious.

The basic rules about liaisons:

. MANDATORY when articles or pronouns are involved.
Examples:
- ils avaient
- nous ouvrons
- vous aimez
- je vous aime
- les enfants
- un ornithorynque
- quelques-un
- des oiseaux

. Also MANDATORY in some set expressions:
- c'est-à-dire
- plus ou moins
- quant à
- Saint-Albert, Saint-Antoine, Saint-André...

Nearly all others are dropped in normal speech.
