What is fern???

A student asked me today what fern is and I had no idea how to describe it. What's fern? A fractal-like flower??? So I tried searching 'fern' on pidic.com (it's a picture dictionary) and luckily there was a picture of fern. As soon as I showed the picture to him, he got it. Now I wonder, when is it actually better to have word definitions over "picture definitions?"

When was Wikipedia created? In my opinion, it's far the best place to look for info.
