I've been to all these colleges

I read this on a BBC message board; I dare not ask the writer what it means.
Does it mean he attended all these colleges, he worked in all these colleges or he visited all these colleges?

Better ask him. What could go wrong?

He is in the middle of a big fight with another guy; I don't want to intrude, but I'm really curious about what he means.
Maybe I'll ask later.

Plus, it'll look like I'm nosy.

He probably just means he visited them. If he had attended them, he would more likely have said "gone to" instead of "been to".
