No vs. not any

Is it grammatically correct to use no instead of not-any when talking about plural nouns?

for example:

There were no leaves on the tree.

VS

There weren't any leaves on the tree.

I would say the latter in everyday speech, but I've heard the former often enough.. and then I started to wonder.

They both sound normal to me.

But there might be some now.
