Why the hell does this word have so many different meanings?

What's the key to understanding this confusing word?

Somebody please get me through this!

As far as I'm concerned I haven't as yet found this key either. As this worries me greatly, please feel free to post as many comments as possible on how ‘as’ can be used in various contexts.
