Foreign words in Chinese

J.C.   Mon Feb 09, 2009 11:52 am GMT
Hello there!!! 你好!
Last week I watched an interesting program about words of foreign origin in Chinese.

Since Chinese only uses ONLY characters to express names or words from other languages, there are 3 ways of expressing foreign words and/or names in Chinese

1) Phonetical translation, i.e, translate a word only based on the sound.
Examples: 奥巴马 (Obama), 伊妹儿 (e-mail)

2) Translation of meaning: 热狗 (hot-dog), 袋鼠( Kangaroo), 电邮 (e-mail)

3) Compound translation (sound+literal meaning): 因特网 (Internet) , 啤酒(beer), 星巴克(Starbucks) .

I wonder if anybody could add more examples to these definitions so that one might have a better idea of word loans in Chinese.

Thanks in advance!!谢谢!!

I guess the following article up to the very latest date might be helpful for you on the issue.

@Shuimo先生:
Thank you so much for your contribution. I will surely read the article!!
谢谢你!

"I'm fed up with Japanese, Chinese and korean. Nobody is interested in learning them in my continent!"
@KLAX: Why is that? Do people in your country think these languages are difficult to learn or useless? I must confess I worked hard to learn Japanese and still strive to improve my Chinese but it was worth it not only in linguistic terms but also for increasing knowledge through learning about another cultures. European languages are cool but there's a lot out there to be learned!!

Cheers!!
