select or elect?

You select a president who you will elect and you elect a president who was selected to be elected.

Select is used for the more trivial things in life. e.g ''please select your favourite colour'' or ''please select a partner'' but select in this manner is mostly used on computer games. 'choose' is the most used word here. ''elect'' is more formal, when electing a Prime Minister or a class reprsentative. elect is used when you SELECT someone for a postion of power.
