　　据美国《侨报》报道，美国南加州大学最近决定取消该校的德语系，为包括中文在内的其他外语让位。这一举措不但在校内引起了轩然大波，而且引发了全美外语教师关于外语教学的实质和意义的火爆讨论。

　　针对学术界的质疑，南加州大学文理学院院长基曼认为，“我们做出取消德语系的决定是十分自然的。过去世界格局的形势曾经一度使得学习德语和俄语变得十分必要，但现在我们的视野更加宽泛了。在这种情况下，我们需要从德语转向其他语言，更加重视中文、阿拉伯语和印地语的学习。”

I can't. It's far too difficult and alien to me.

It's just that byzantine writing system...

Maybe if Chinese changed to a modern type of script and stop using an archaic system of pictures and characters I would be more interested and it would be easier for foreigners to learn.

Chinese is only for the high IQ learners.
