Is this conditional?

"He finished his beer sadly, wondered if he would have been better off,
after all, among them at the club."

I'm a native speaker but not a grammarian, so take what I say with a grain of salt (question it). Conditional sentences, as I understand them, have an outcome contingent upon a precondition, such as:

I would read more if I had the time.
She would wear a short skirt but she doesn't have the legs for it.

Your sentence doesn't show a contingency to my mind, but is about a man who regrets a choice. I could be wrong of course.

You might want to rewrite the sentence for other reasons. I would write it like this --

"Feeling sad as he finished his beer, he wondered whether he would have been better off among those at the club after all."

Or "he felt sad as he finished his beer, and wondered....."

1. He finished his beer sadly, wondered if he would have been better off,
after all, among them at the club

=

1. He finished his beer sadly, [and] wondered if he would have been better off, after all, [if he had stayed] among them at the club.

(Other verb phrases might stand in the place of "stayed", e.g. "spent the evening".)

How can you finish a beer sadly, spill it on yourself? Very poor use of an adverb if you ask me.
