Shakespeare in India

I just read a book of stories by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and came about a short scene where a character in her book thinks of her and a friend, as schoolchildren, sitting on a bed with their homework, and rattle down the (named) metaphors in Hamlets monologue.
I wonder: Is something like this really part of the curriculum at indian schools?

Why wouldn't it be? There are hundreds of thousands of native English speakers in India, and millions of fluent second language speakers of English. Surely they must read Shakespeare too.
