"I know a refugee from Bosnia here in Seattle who claims that Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian are basically the same language and that Yugoslavs who say they aren't are foolish."

1. He's correct. In Bosnia-Hercegovina, we took to using "BCS" as our abbreviated term for the language.

When you spoke to a Bosniac (Bosnian Muslim), you spoke Bosnian.

When you spoke to a Bosnian Croat, you spoke Croatian.

When you spoke to a Bosnian Serb, you spoke Serbian.

But it was - and is - all the same language of course.

It's a bit like an Austrian claiming he speaks Austrian not German.

By the way, the term "Yugoslav" is now officiallly defunct.
