<< In France is also the second, after English. >>

Europa Sur (17/01/2005)

English is the language most studied in Spain. It is estimated that 36% of the population is learning the language at present. FOLLOWED BY FRENCH, 19% OF STUDENTS, while Italian, German or Portuguese languages are minority reach only 4% of the students.

And from the source you mentioned,

"El inglés, con un 41%, encabeza la lista de lenguas extranjeras más habladas por los europeos después de su lengua materna, por delante del francés (19%), el alemán (10%) o el español (7%)"
http://www.educaweb.com/noticia/2005/01/17/53-espanoles-no-sabe-hablar-ningun-idioma-extranjero-2762.html

... which means that Spanish is much less important in Europe as a whole than Catalan in Spain ...

:-)

The most difficult languages are in theory Chinese, Arabic, Japanese and Korean

This statement is ridiculous! Difficult for who??? A Japanese may find Russian, German or even Spanish much harder than Chinese or korean. It all depends on your mother tongue! Most comments in this thread have no sense linguistically.

You are wrong. This stat doesn't show the tendencies now. The linguistic reality is now very different.

A lot of people of +50 years old studied French at school in all the countries when French was important. They are considered French speakers as foreign language, and they are a lot. So, there is a 19%.

But new generations study English, Spanish and German in Europe. So, if we only consider the students of languages in Europe from 2000 to 2009, the report is probably very different in percentages.

The most studied languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina are English, German, French and Spanish, but we actually prefer Portuguese because their troops helped us a lot. Viva Portugal!

Which confirms that many young students learn Spanish, but that very few bother to be able to speak it. Big news.

Well, I've already made the final decision as to which language combination of the 2 I should choose to learn, and the answer is "French & Italian". This post is over!

Shut up! The new generations study English, Russian, German, Italian, and still French but not Spanish.

I really cannot understand why you insist that Spanish is studied by Europeans and Asians when these people knows that itsspeakers has zero contributions in science, technology, literature, arts, and other fields of learning.

Is it useful to learn Spanish? No,because people would learn nothing except VANITY, PLEASURE, CORRUPTION, and DRUG TRAFFICKING.

Ahhh! It is the same as French, the only difference is the disgusting nasal sound, the extreme Chauvinisme and the muslim problems of France!

Linguistical: Spanish is the most learnt foreign language in the U.S.A. During the last 10 years, bi-lingual signs popped up significantly in all stores. All big media companies (magazines, TVs, etc.) increased their Spanish portfolios. Stores hires Spanish speakers. Even Obama spoke Spanish during his campaign video:

And here is where he tells American kids to learn Spanish:

I would say most doctors and most employers in the Western states can speak some basic Spanish, because a lot of their patients and workers are Hispanic. I have seen plenty of Arab and Asian doctors speaking in Spanish.

I had some relative kids coming to visit from Canada. They were telling me, they liked U.S. better, because in Canada everything was bi-lingual, and you see bi-lingual signs all over. I had to remind them that U.S. today is also bi-lingual, just that instead of French, you've got Spanish here.

During Iraq war, U.S. recruited many mercenaries from Latin America. Why? Because Spanish was used and was useful there! Many of the U.S. troops were Hispanic!

The thing that really ticked people off was when the "Spanish version of US National Anthem" was invented.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4gP_pSOCz4

George W. Bush had to say: "I don't think our national anthem should be sang in Spanish". Ha ha. Relax, it's not really the national anthem. It was just a parody.

In Brazil, French along with English are the the other main languages used after Portuguese.

Here's the text quoted from a reliable website written in Portuguese by a Brazilian.

The Brazil language, known as Portuguese is rather unique in that Brazil is the only country in South America to use it. Although Portuguese is the main language of Brazil, there are many other languages that are also spoken there. English and French are two of the other main languages even though, obrigado Brazil shows some influence of the Asian languages. Portuguese being the national language, dates back to when Portugal ruled over Brazil.

U.S. recruitment of Latin American mercenaries to fight in Iraq is a fact. Sad but true. These mercenaries didn't need to speak to the Iraqi people: they just need to shoot at them. They only needed to talk to their U.S. bosses, in Spanish.
