Yes, "dresser" is still quite a common word here. In fact, I'd say it's the default word for such an item. I personally wouldn't use any other word but "dresser" to describe it.

Really? I've heard it in various contexts, but you're right that in terms of frequency it's most often to come out as gay (or something non-heterosexual). But it can theoretically work with anything that someone used to hide or not talk about but now is "out."
