I was reading all the languages in Wikipedia. I focus on the countries where the language is spoken. English, French, Spanish and Arabic are the big 4.

But the 5th-7th places are not clear: German, Russian and Portuguese have almost the same countries as official.

Even it is not clear if Abkhasia or South Ossetia (for Russian language) are two countries or not, or if Italy, Belgium and Denmark should be considered as German speaking countries (German is only official in a little region of these countries).

What do you think about?

Russian is 5th thanks to all the former Soviet Republics, where the language is official or semi-official.

Portuguese is perhaps 6th because this languages is widespread around the World. It is spoken in all the Continents, but almost all the speakers are in Brazil.

Finally, German is probably 7th. It is the less spoken and it is only spoken in a little area of Central Europe.

German is one of three official languages of Belgium (German community has autonomy in Belgium),but it is only protected minority language in South Denmark and co-official in province of Bozen-Bolzano (Northern Italy).

German is not spoken in Germany either. Bussiness men usually prefer using English :-9
