I've noticed that in the UK "Happy Christmas" is used by uneducated working class people while "Merry Christmas" is used by middle class educated people.

In South Africa, where I'm from, you'll never hear anyone using "Happy Christmas", I only heard it for the first time in the UK.

In Ireland we almost exclusively say "Happy Christmas". Outside of Ireland I have only heard "Merry Christmas"
