LAGRIMA

i was listening to public radio and they introduced a piece called
"una furtive lagrima". these are spanish words but the man who composed the piece is italian. i googled it and found that it is from an italian opera.

i don't speak italian and so i was wondering if the words were the same but found that lagrima translates to italian as lacrima, so what's the deal? did he give the piece a spanish name or is it italian as well?

thanks,

chico

In italian: "una furtiva lacrima".

In spanish, "una furtiva lágrima"

lagrima was used in Italian too, nowadays it's archaic or literary

In Spanish it is una lágrima furtiva, not una furtiva lágrima.

Yes. It is old Italian, from 1832, the year when it was written. It is interesting than old Italian is even more similar to Spanish than nowadays.

1832 is not too old as 2000 years ago.

There are words were Spanish uses g and Italian c and vice-versa

Sp lagrima It lacrima
Sp secreto It segreto

But in general in Spanish softening of consonants is more frequent.

1300 years ago The latin spoken in Italy, Spain or France was rather different

latin spoken 2000 years ago in Spain was different than in Italy because Latin in Spain was brought by soldiers who were not native many of them but spoke other Italic languages like Oscan.
