What language is most imporant for a film scholar?

I think this is a much tougher question than the one posed in the "bmost important language for history" thread.

Italians made a major contribution to film, but the quality of Italian cinema has severely declined since the 1960s.

Spanish is not considered a major language of the old cinema, but it's on the rise today.

What about German, Russian? Maybe even Japanese?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention French, which I will say is the most important besides English.

I think it should be something like this:
1. English/French
2. German/Russian
3. Italian/Spanish

Most important are IMHO:

1. English
2. French
3. German
4. Italian
5. Russian
6. Swedish
7. Spanish

Perhaps you could write to Roeper and Ebert.
