punch each other awake

The whole sentence is "I guess grown-ups don't punch each other awake.", and it's from Freaky Friday. The situation is, the daughter in her mom's body uncounciously punched her dad(husband) to wake him up.

Is the sentence gramatically correct?
To me, it should've been "I guess grown-ups don't punch each other to wake."

No. It's OK.

I slapped him awake. (not "awoke"/"awoken" or "to awake")
He slid the door open. (not "opened" or "to open")
You slammed it close. (not "closed" or "to close")

Even though that sentence sounds strange, you could say:

"I guess grown-ups don't punch each other to wake up."
