Well, a recent psycholinguistic study showed that you can improve your second-language listening ability by watching a movie with subtitles that are in the same language as the film. However, subtitles in your native language rather than that of the film could actually be counter-productive. So beware of translated pop videos!

Me, back in the days of the Dreamcast, I experienced an upward shift in my English level by playing the English version of the game Shenmue with the English subtitles enabled.

In his latest article, Tom describes a similar experience with the game The Secret of Monkey Island.

I don't see why. I prefer subtitles in my native language because then I can immediatly know the meaning of what is being spoken. If the subtitles are in the original language then whatever I didn't understand in the movie is lost. Perhaps it might be useful when you can't even distinguish the individual words being spoken, but even then I prefer reading the subtitles and then reverse-translating them in my head to try to guess what was spoken.
