<<-All though there are many bad things in colonialism, there are some benefits (roads, schools, etc.), which the Dominican Republic got more of due to a longer colonial history>>

If a short colonial period is responsible for the poverty in Haiti, why is the U.S. the wealthiest nation in the world? It declared independence almost thirty years before Haiti.

He was comparing the Dominican Republic and Haiti, not Haiti and the USA. And it was only one factor amongst many.

French language is a PROBLEM in Haiti.

It is true that a language is a barrier for economics and at this moment medical and food aid.

All Latin America is helping each other better and faster because they speak one language, Spanish.

At the same time some American little islands speak English, like USA and Canada.

Haiti should add Spanish and/or English as official languages: the true World languages.

So, French language is a dangerous barrier in the Americas. Haiti, the only francophone country in the Americas is the poorest in this continent.

Yes. French language is a problem for the Francophone countries.

All Francophone countries should change and speak/study other languages: English, Spanish or Arabic or other African languages.

What a shame!

The 10 poorest countries on Earth are 9 African countries and Afghanistan.

Well, 7 OF THEM ARE FRENCH SPEAKING COUNTRIES: BURUNDI, CHAD, CONGO, BURKINA FASO, MALI, NIGER, CENTRAL AFRICA REP. YOU SHOULD ADD HAITI.

IT IS CONFIRMED. THE POOREST COUNTRIES ON EARTH SPEAK FRENCH.

PD. And French is the second World language? Even Arabic has more economic prestige in Africa.

France limited herself to make of Haiti a black slaves reservoir. They didn't create schools, universities, and roads as someone pointed out. When the French lost any interest on Haiti they abandoned those black slaves , leaving behind them an authentic African country in the Caribbean Sea.

What is with these vendettas against certain languages? The French language doesn't have anything to do with Haiti's economic woes.

Yes. Spanish language is a problem for the Hispanic countries.

All Hispanic countries should change and speak/study other languages: English, French or Arabic or other African languages.

What a shame!

The 10 poorest countries on Earth are 9 African countries and Afghanistan.

Well, 7 OF THEM ARE SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES: PARAGUAY, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, HONDURAS, ECUADOR, BOLIVIA. YOU SHOULD ADD HAITI.

IT IS CONFIRMED. THE POOREST COUNTRIES ON EARTH SPEAK SPANISH.

PS. And Spanish is the second World language? Even Quechua has more economic prestige in Hispanic America.

I've been trying to find out, to no avail, if Haitian Creole and French are mutually intelligible or not. Does anybody know? Can any french speakers comment?
Tommy L.   Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:08 am GMT
@Paul No - they're not. There are a lot of words that are similar but the grammar has completely simplified. There are also lots of Spanish words, words from indigenous languages, English words, etc. I think that if both the French speaker and the Haitian Creole speaker made a real effort they could communicate if necessary, but they're not mutually intelligible without a lot of work.

@Tommy L.

Are you saying Walloon French creole and Haitian French creole are not mutually intelligible with French without a lot of work?!
Blanco   Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:28 am GMT
Haitian French Creole and French are not mutually intelligible, and almost all the population speak Creole, not French.

Anyway, French Creole is a barrier in the Caribbean, where all people speak Spanish or English.

The differences between Haiti (French Creole) and Dominican Republic (Spanish speaking) are impressive. If you compare both countries, it seems that Dominican Rep. is a rich country.

A photo of both countries is also incredible (Haiti has no trees, no food, no water, nothing):
