I'm from germany. I think most germans can understand most dialects easily because most of the younger generations don't develop them until later in life. As for the dialects you mentioned, there are more dialects than you say such as shwebish(can't say it in English) which is what the older people in southern germany speak, and not all are from within germany. There is swiss german and austrian german for example.
