In the Quiet Night
So bright a gleam on the foot of my bed –
Could there have been a frost already?
Lifting myself to look, I found that it was moonlight.
Sinking back again, I thought suddenly of home.

Pensée dans une nuit tranquille
Devant mon lit, la lune jette une clarté très vive ;
Je lève la tête, je contemple la lune brillante ;

The 床 is translated/understood usually as "bed". But this has created quite a bit of controversy. It just does not quite fit with the rest of the poem. See http://www.pkucn.com/viewthread.php?tid=143829 for an entire thread on this topic. And this issue has been discussed all over newspapers and TV programs.

But it's amazing how people overlooked the obvious. The simplest explanation is that the 床 here is a shorthand for 石床, a typical bench carved out of stone that is used in people's backyards. A search for 石床 not only reveals for pictures of these Tang-dynasty objects, but also other poems from the same period. Moreover, the 听松石床 is a famous bench related to Li Bai's uncle.

Sometimes it amazes me how the Chinese need hundreds and hundreds years to correct their mistakes. Information just propagates so slowly there. 听松石床 is not a new object, it existed from the time of Li Bai, for everyone to see. Yet the Chinese just were never able to connect the dots.
