Spanish language is set to die out in the USA

It's interesting but a new study of demographics published by Yale shows exactly that.

Spanish language in the USA will have the exact same destiny that the German language had back in the 18th and 19th century when Germans were changing linguistically the face of english speaking America.

Apparently the study shows that hispanic immigration to the USA is set to start declining sometime around this decade as Latin America is quickly developing, Mexico's demographics are sinking to near replacement levels and less and less people are finding it tempting to go up north like it was back in the 80's, 90's and 2000

As a result the hispanics already living in America are starting to be absorbed by the mainstream American diaspora just like it happened with the Irish, Italians and Germans back in the day.

According to the study a very large percentage of hispanic immigrants struggle with the english language, while their children speak both english and spanish fluently sometimes mixing them both creating the so called spanglish dialect..... it's however their grandchildren the ones who quickly lose their ability to speak spanish fluently, as a result the overwhelming majority of second generation hispanic immigrants can't not speak spanish, not even at a basic level!

It's sort of funny but America is witnessing the climax of the hispanic immigration to America..... in the coming decades the phenomenon of the illegal immigration coming from Mexico will be nothing but history and the average America latino will speak as much as spanish as the average Non-hispanic American!

Ah yes, I saw that coming to; back in the day the Irish were destroying the American way of life by coming in such large numbers; a century later it's nothing but history.

The same is happening with hispanics, the USA is an expert at absorbing millions of immigrants without any major problem!

It did for centuries and it's still doing it now.

I don't think so. There are other studies that show exactly the contrary: there will be a strong hispanization of the South West, Florida and some big cities like New York and Chicago.

Latin America is NOT quickly developing, as you say. They have a lot of problems and they will go to USA in the next years.

Mexico is NOT sinking to near replacement levels. Even if the demographics of Mexico is not so strong, there are another 20 Hispanic countries. So, the Hispanic emigration to the USA is NOT stopping from Cuba, Central America and South America.

New Mexican Spanish is still spoken after five centuries in New Mexico, which leads to think that Hispanics are not so easily absorbed by the Anglo culture. Spanish not only protects itself from English assimilation but native American languages under Spanish umbrella like Navajo have better prospects than if Spanish was not spoken in their territory. There are 150 000 Navajo speakers in New Mexico thanks to the health of the Spanish language. Also Latin American countries will be always poorer than USA so first generation Hispanic immigrants will not cease arriving to USA ever.

<<Latin America is NOT quickly developing, as you say. They have a lot of problems and they will go to USA in the next years.>>

But the US is collapsing economically, so soon, Latin America and the US may be at roughly the same economic level.

Maybe the Latin Americans will go to Spain instead?

Actually Cuban is wrong

1. Not every one who comes from a Spanish speaking country goes to the USA is such large number as mexicans or cubans.... when was the last time you saw Uruguayans, chileans, paraguayans, colombians sneaking into the USA by the thousands like cubans and mexicans do?

Even if the entire populatino of cuba was to come to the USA it would be absorbed, cuba only has 10 million people and they don't even have children

and mexico is quickly losing demographic growth, most mexicans in mexico don't wanna have too many children and most of mexico's poor are in the USA

pd: perhaps not cuba, but south america is developing quite fast.

Spain already has more than one million of Latin American migrants. They are useful in some way to dilute Catalan and Basque speaking minorities but appart from that they should go better to USA where they have a brighter future colonising the vast country.

<<they should go better to USA where they have a brighter future colonising the vast country. >>

But once they get to Spain, don't they have full access of the rest of the EU? And, once Russia Joins the EU, they'll really have a vast area to colonise.

I find it ammusing how you talk as if the Hispanics are some sort of superior race. I don't dispute that Spaniards are intelligent people, but most Latin Americans are as thick as any third-worlder.
Franco   Wed Apr 07, 2010 2:15 pm GMT
I see, you think about the Hispanics in racial terms, but Hispanics are simply people who speak the same language, Spanish. There are many ethnic groups that speak Spanish. Each one has its role. It's like an Army. The Mexican immigrants are the soldiers and the Spaniards are the capitains. First the Mexicans flood USA and then Spain tele-controlls them from Madrid.

Europe needs more spunky folks like Franco, if it's ever going to shake off its case of terminal Political Correctness.

Quebec anyone?

The Quebecois have been in Canada for 250 years and yet they still speak french with low immigration rates.

within 15 years the southern states will become offically bilingual and that will be that.

<<There are other studies that show exactly the contrary: there will be a strong hispanization of the South West>>

What studies? The ones you pulled out of your ass?

There's no "hispanization" going on. Even in the most "hispanic" places in the country, there's no growth of the language. The young and native born, tend to have absolutely no proficiency in spanish whatsoever.

<<Quebec anyone?

French is the NATIVE language in quebec. It is not comparable to spanish in the U.S. Spanish in the U.S is a foreign language spoken only by immigrants.
