"it's the carrot on the end of the stick"

What does it mean? I don't understand this phrase. please explain it to me!

It is something that makes you work really hard. Thing of a rabbit with a stick tied to its back, and the stick has a carrot hanging from it. So the rabbit will be running trying to get the carrot.
