Why does Spanish provoke so many passions and hatred?

CIA is American, they don't have much idea about other countries. They even believe Irak has nuclear weapons so figure out ... Eurobarometer is more accurate.

Another source:

El catalán en Cataluña
-------------------------Año 2003------------------Año 2008

Lengua materna--------2.177.800---38,70%---- 2.186.000 34,60%

This is according to the very Catalan autonomous Government, not clueless CIA .

So we have 2.177.800 native Catalan speakers in Catalonia which represents 4,6% of 47 millions of inhabitants Spain has. Compare that to 17%. It's much less in reality

If you want to invent numbers don't cite sources that make you out a fool. That link states the same than me. In 2004 only 40% of Catalans spoke Catalan natively in Catalonia, not 53.3%. This means 2 177 800 speakers in total. In 2008 this percentage got reduced to 34,6%.

Well, it's the same. You agree that not all Catalans have Catalan as their mother tongue . That was my main point.

All Spaniards speak Spanish, whether natively or not. According to Spanish Constituion all Spaniards shall know Spanish. Also percentage of Spaniards who speak Spanish natively is bigger than percentage of Catalans who speak Catalan natively in Catalonia.
