Vocabulary is 90% identical, Afrikaans grammar is much easier than Dutch, no verb conjugation, the past tense is completely regular and also Afrikaans spelling has been simplified from Dutch.
As for sound they are pretty similar, but Afrikaans has dropped the hard-G, so that makes it sound better.
Dutch is probably more useful on the whole, as you can speak Dutch with an Afrikaans speaker and probably be understood, but I think the Dutch are spineless lefties, so I feel more at home with the Afrikaans out-look.

Well Dutch is useful in the Netherlands and Belgium. Afrikaans is useful in South Africa and Namibia. Afrikaans is easier than Dutch because it's grammar simplified. Dutch is more complicated.
Once you can speak and write Dutch you will be able to read Afrikaans newspapers and will be able to have a conversation with an Afrikaans person if you speak slow. As for which one sound better, it up to you to decide which one sounds nicer.

If I were an Afrikaans speaker I would not be so proud. What's the point in being proud of a language mostly spoken by blacks?.

Exactly, the Dutch are the last to complain. They wanted a multicultural Nederland. In the 70s they even stab their own white Afrikaans cousins in the back.
Today they are voting for Geert Wilders. Shame, what happend? Is the multicultural Nederland not working out for you anymore? Should have listen to your colonial Dutch citizens when they told you it wont work.
