Hi..
Please, take my hand..!!

What is the real meaning for the verb "have" .I know that It means (own) !!,but in this sentences I confuse "let's have bread and jam for tea"??

Also the verb "been" what means exactly ?

...THANK YOU ....
Bob   Wed Jan 18, 2006 3:18 am GMT
It's the same as saying "let's eat bread and jam for dinner".

"been" is the past participle of "to be".

<Hi..
Please, take my hand..!! >

Ok Sarah !

-Will you marry me ?

"Have" means many things, Sarah, not just "to own". It is also used as a "helping verb" to form certain tenses, such as "I have been to her house twice this week". It can be used in idiomatic expressions such as "I have to go to bed", where it means "must".

Thank you so much, Bob & Uriel ..

Dear Don ,I mean help me ??!!!!! Am I wrong ??!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uriel, you didn't explain what "been" means?
I know that there are "verb to be "," v.to do",: v. to have" ,Can you explain them for me,with my thank??
Uriel   Wed Jan 18, 2006 8:10 pm GMT
Oh, dear! "Been" is another one of those words, like have, that can mean different things when used idiomatically. It is the past tense of "to be" which can be used to mean "to exist", but in the sentence below:

"I have been to her house twice this week"

It means I have GONE to her house. Like have, forms of "to be" (is, was, am, were, being, been, will, will be) are often used as "helping verbs" to construct various tenses:

I eat.
I AM eating.
I WILL BE eating.
I WAS eating.

And if you want to throw in a similar usage of "have":

I HAVE eaten.
I HAD eaten.

And you can even use both together!

I WILL HAVE eaten.
