Passable/Possible
My pronunciations are
passable /p{sIbl=/ possibe /pA:sIbl=/ I believe in RP, passable /pA:s@bl=/ possibe /pQsIbl=/ so, passibe(RP) and possible(GA) can be very similar.
In my New England accent:
passable - ["p{s@bl=] possible - ["pQs@bl=] In General American they'd be: passable - ["p{s@bl=] possible - ["pAs@bl=] And as Guy said (and going by the Cambridge Online Dictionary), in RP they'd be: passable - ["pAs@bl=] possible - ["pQs@bl=]
Oh, I forgot to note, in RP, the "-ible" of "possible" could be [Ibl=], depending on whether or notyou have at least a partial weak vowel merger. The Cambridge Online Dictionary does list the pronunciation as ["pQs@bl=], though.
And in General American, some speakers could use [Ibl=] for both words.
I myself have:
<passable> : /"p{sI%b@l/ -> ["p_h{.sI:.%b5=] <possible> : /"pAsI%b@l/ -> ["p_hA.sI:.%b5=] Such is effectively the same as the GA version with [Ibl=] rather than [@bl=], but I wanted to point the vowel lengths and that [5=] rather than [l=] proper is likely to be used.
Many thanks for helping me with this vowel's length.
