English people mistaken for Aussies?

"Oz" is hardly ever used in the US to refer to Australia, except by people who have had some close association with the place. I would imagine that this is because in the US the word was already preempted by L. Frank Baum! Also, it seems to me that compared to the rest of the English-speaking world, the US rarely makes up nicknames for other places or people, and when we do, they are usually far from affectionate.... So you should feel honored, in a way, that we went to the trouble to come up with "Brit". ;)

I am English, though I have lived in the north of Scotland for more than half my life. I have heard accents from the south of England, just north of London, that I have mistaken for "colonial" ones (can't remember whether it was South African or Australian).
