Art as in painting etc.
Arts - In school the Arts would be History, English, Music, Art etc. as apposed to academic subjects like science and maths.
Here's what the dictionary has to say:
"a. arts Artful devices, stratagems, and tricks.
b. Artful contrivance; cunning."
What on earth that means, I have no idea!
The example I gave is probably the most common usage, I would have thought - (creative subjects). Also, of course, are the martial arts.
