It means he has to stay alert as you pose different questions to him, or your work is so advanced that he has to try and keep one step ahead? Thats it roughly, though if you gave a bit more of what context it was said in, could give you a better idea of what he meant? You probably get the idea though.

You say it also when people do things that are unexpected, It used more in that context I think.
