What is "opinion" referred to as "two cents" sometimes?

Its a way of saying that you have payed your way, to be able to give your opinion. Here in the UK we used to say "to give your penny's worth" I still say this, but i have been known to say the American "two cents" on occasion.

I think it's a way of being modest and saying that your opinion isn't worth much.

JIM C in EBORACUM:

I think it's fairly common for people in the UK to say "well, that's my two cents worth, anyway".

On the more British front, people say to someone deep in thought: "A penny for your thoughts". And of something they regard as inferior: "I wouldn't give you two pence for that!"
