rested against - what does it mean?

"...said C., crouching down awkwardly to get to his old-fashioned satchel, which rested against the ottoman".

So, where did it exactly rest - ON the ottoman leaning on ottoman's back, or ON the floor leaning on the ottoman?

I would definately say the latter.

rested against = leaned on
