Hi!   Thu May 11, 2006 10:36 am GMT
Are there any rules for stress placement in English? Thanks in advance.

1 is that if u want a certain part of a sentence to be more important u put stress on it.

There is not a general rule, but there is a tendency to put the accent on the first syllable (Although I have heard this is more than anything an American phenomenon).

As with other Germanic languages, English generally prefers initial stress. Exceptions may be found in some words composed of certain affixes but in terms of overall words initial stress is prevalent in English.
