How do you pronounce ''clothes''?

SpaceFlight   Sun Aug 21, 2005 3:08 pm GMT
I pronounce it /kloUz/, the same way that I pronounce ''close''.
aida   Sun Aug 21, 2005 5:01 pm GMT
i actually pronounce it / clous
Sander   Sun Aug 21, 2005 5:04 pm GMT
like 'cloves'.

Re: clothes - I pronounce it with the edda (ð) sound (kloðz) even though kloz, maybe even klo will probably become the eventual official pronunciation given the universal tendency for human languages to simplify. In French, Old French 'loup' (wolf) is pronounced without the final -p-sound in Modern French.
Mxsmanic   Sun Aug 21, 2005 6:19 pm GMT
/kloz/ for me and everyone else I've heard.
Rick Johnson   Sun Aug 21, 2005 10:16 pm GMT
I think its one of the most difficult words for non-english speakers to say. I pronounce it clowthz.
american nic   Sun Aug 21, 2005 11:17 pm GMT
I pronounce it the same as SpaceFlight and Mxsmanic.
Ryan   Mon Aug 22, 2005 12:03 am GMT
/klOuthz/ when I'm being careful with pronuncation, /klOuz/ when I am not.
Travis   Mon Aug 22, 2005 12:14 am GMT
In most speech here, "clothes" is both /kloDz/ -> [k5_0o:Dz] and /kloz/ -> [k5_0o:z], with the former being favored increasingly in more formal speech, and the latter being favored increasingly in more informal speech.
Kirk   Mon Aug 22, 2005 8:20 am GMT
/kloz/ for me, occasionally /kloDz/
Joe   Tue Aug 23, 2005 1:20 am GMT
/kloUthz/ usually and /kloUz/ in fast speech.
Tiffany   Tue Aug 23, 2005 5:09 am GMT
The same way I pronounce the verb "close". I think that is probably /kloz/ - all the time
Uriel   Wed Aug 24, 2005 3:42 am GMT
I pronounce both the th and the s. I say "clothe" and then add the s, so it ends up being a slightly longer word.
zabi   Wed Aug 24, 2005 6:52 am GMT
whats the difference b/w the usage of 'WILL' & 'SHALL' ??
Uriel   Wed Aug 24, 2005 7:11 pm GMT
To me they are equivalent, and "shall" sounds archaic, but Commonwealth usage may be different.
