Italians and America

Does anyone have any ideas why Italians are called "the Azzurris?"
And why is America called "melting pot?"
"Ethnic and racial diversity - the "melting pot" - is celebrated as a core element of the American ideology."

Because the italian soccer team wears a blue jersey (azzurro= blue)

So do the French (Les Bleus). It was blue vs blue in the World Cup.

awesome.
What about the 2nd query? Why is America called the "melting pot" of the world?

Because many ethnicities are assimilated into American culture. I believe the first person to use the term was a Frenchman in the 1700s.

"Azzurro" means a light, vibrant blue - similar to azure in English. They also have the word "blu" in Italian - which is a deeper, darker shade.

<<I believe the first person to use the term was a Frenchman in the 1700s.>>

Hector St. Jean de Crevecoeur in "Letters from an American Farmer" (1782).

<<"Ethnic and racial diversity - the "melting pot" - is celebrated as a core element of the American ideology.">>

"Melting pot" is believed by a good number of socialogists to be an outdated concept, prefering instead the "salad bowl" metaphor, where immigrants retain their native cultures/customs rather than assimilate.

It is true, tomatos feel like tomatos, the lettuce feels like a lettuce, but they all feel they form one salad.
