English vs. Frisian Test.

Sander   Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:08 pm GMT
I would like to see how big the mutual intelligibility is between English and Frisian. ( the closest continental language).

So do me a favor and try to translate this text.
(Knowledge any other Germanic language besides English is a negative thing...)

Good luck!

Frysk blood, tsjoch op! Wol nouris brûz je en siede

En bounz je troch ûs ieren om!

Flean op, wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d'ierde,

It Fryske lân fol eare en rom.

Klink dan en daverje fier yn it roun,

Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske groun!

Trochloftich folk fan dizze ‬de namme,

Wês jimmer op dy âl‬den great.

Bliuw ivich fan dy grize hege stamme

In grien, in krêftich duorjend leat.

Klink dan en daverje fier yn it roun,

Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske groun!

That was gibberish to me, Sander. Any chance we can hear it spoken?
Travis   Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:26 pm GMT
Sander, I cannot tell at all what is being said as a whole, even though I do recognize individual words nonetheless. Remember, English and West Frisian (I assume the above is West Frisian specifically) are not crossintelligible in writing to any real extent at all.

I know, I had taken the Frisian anthem (which is in Old frisian) but to my horror I can't find a sung/spoken version.

I ask MJD to delete this topic, (but Ill be back ! :)

I am a native English speaker from Angle Land (Mercia, to be exact), so here goes:

Frysk blood, tsjoch op! Wol nouris brûz je en siede
Fresh blood, shut up! Would nourish bruises on your side
En bounz je troch ûs ieren om!
And bounce the truest of us home!
Flean op, wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d'ierde,
Fuck off, why songs are best if not heard,
It Fryske lân fol eare en rom.
From frisky lads full of lager.
Klink dan en daverje fier yn it roun,
Refill your glasses and gather round the fire,
Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske groun!
Then everyone one here will get on down.

Trochloftich folk fan dizze ‬de namme,
Everyone regardless of name,
Wês jimmer op dy âl‬den great.
Is my friend if they drink as much as me.
Bliuw ivich fan dy grize hege stamme
Before I vomit torrents of green phlegm
In grien, in krêftich duorjend leat.
Let me tell you something.
Klink dan en daverje fier yn it roun,
You're the best mate I've ever had, you are
Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske groun!
You're sound, I love you.

Spoken like a native, eh?

I love it!!!

If Hythloday's translation isn't the right one, it damn well SHOULD be! Send it on down to the Frisians, Sander, and tell them to update their lingo to match.

Looks less intelligable than Dutch
Ryan   Sun Aug 28, 2005 7:13 am GMT
I think we can rule out mutual intelligibility here *rolls eyes*

Very nice try! Sadly far from correct :-) why don't you compare it yourself...

Got to say, I prefer the jokey translation here to the real one! ;)

With this kind of tests you curse all the French loans ;)

But then again those are the words that make English pleasant to hear.
Adam   Sun Aug 28, 2005 6:36 pm GMT
Is that why Dutch is ugly like German?
Sander   Sun Aug 28, 2005 6:37 pm GMT
You've never heard Dutch or German LOL Idiot.

Not all parts of Frisian are intelligible to English speakers, but it's more intelligible to us than any other language. It is our sister language - no other language is more closely related.

Look how close they are -

Dyn âlde eare, o Fryske groun! - Your old honour, o Friesian ground!

Grien - green

Tchiise - Cheese

Twolve - Twelve

wy sjonge - We sing

Flean op, wy sjonge it bêste lân fan d'ierde - Fly up, we sing of the best land on the earth:

It's almost the same!
