Lyric / lyrics

If we have in mind the words for ONE song, is it correct to call that a lyric, or lyrics?

You would say "the lyrics to a song" when referring to all the words of a particular song. You would use "the lyric" to refer to a particular line.

Or at least, I would.

I would say lyric if it was for one song, and lyrics when more than 1 song.
Anyone?

I'm with Uriel, lyric to a particular line of a song, lyrics to the whole song, or more than one song

As a member of the english speaking community and a songwriter myself, i just have to agree with Pete on this... lyric for part of the song and lyrics for the whole song. Of course the more simpler way would be to say words and leave it at that.

That's not actually what Pete said, Pianoman.

I myself would say that for a single song, one would still use the term "lyrics", with the term "lyric" only being for a particular part, such as a line, of such.

Ain't there a "rule" telling what's right, or is this just about "taste" ?

A while back, Mjd said to SpaceFlight:

<<Oddly enough, you also have the same address as the person that posts random strings of letters and periods.>>

Why do feel this need to post random strings of letters? Does it provide you with some perverse thrill or sense of fulfillment? We know it's you.

I would assume that it's a sign of some sort of mental illness.
