Hi, I have just been looking at internet slang dictionaries for:

chicken, and going south, or heading south, and none of them could come up with the answers that I was looking for.

chicken means scared, timid.... you are such a chicken.. you can't say hello to a girl that you have fallen in love at first sight. Depending on the orgin of point south or north could be in any direction. Going or heading means "moving in a particular direction." they are not slang terms but simple and straightforward English sentences.

on all maps as far as i know, north is up and south is down so travelling south means going in a downward direction on the map. so "going south" means moving in a downward direction.

the term has also been used to describe a persons body in the ageing process. for instance "I hate getting old everything starts going south"
(sagging breasts, belly, muscles, bum, chin).
