Timothy Leary once said:

"Turn on, tune in, drop out."

It has something to do with taking drugs, but can anyone explain the precise meaning of each proposition (especially the drop out one).

Thanks.

Turn On: Turn On, is like switching on a radio

Tune In: Is like finding music you like

Drop Out: Is like, enjoying the music, and dropping all the other things that you should be doing.

In particular, it refers to dropping out of nomal society, dropping college, etc.

A person who 'drops out' is a Drop Out. Unfortunately, 'in the modern world', such a person is likely to be called 'a loser'.

(The Jam: This is the Modern World)

Flower Power, and Hippies are things of the past. If you are interested in Youth Culture, there was a TV comedy called 'The Young Ones' a few years back, which may or may not appeal.

It actually referred to using psychedelic drugs to effect changes in yourself and, ultimately, society. This Wikipedia article explains it:

We actually studied this song in English when I was at School. The English Teacher explained that 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' was a reference to 'LSD', and I don't mean, Pounds, Shillings and Pence.

(Lennon/McCartney)

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Aaaaahhhhh...

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
That grow so incredibly high

Newpaper taxis appear on the shore
Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
And you're gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Aaaaahhhhh...

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Aaaaahhhhh...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Aaaaahhhhh...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds (fade out)
