Using a translated text instead of a dictionary

Another thread mentioned Heinrich Schliemann's method of memorizing entire novels to achieve fluency. He would use a translation of the target novel to make it understandable.

Does anyone have experience with using translations (or "dual-language" texts, or interlinear or parallel texts)--rather than a dictionary? I'm wondering whether it would be the perfect help in making a text comprehensible, or if it would end up being a crutch.

(And the same question goes for movie subtitles.)
