Is the Spanish pronoun Vos conjugated differently?

Marc   Thu Dec 07, 2006 12:06 am GMT
It is confusing because it has it's own conjugation system. does it?
JR   Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:15 am GMT
It depends,

Living in the United States I have little exposure to that pronoun but it appears that it has the same conjugation as the pronoun "Tú", as it is used in Argentina anyways.

If you mean the pronoun "Vosotros", which is quite different and used predominantly in Spain, then yes, it does have a diferent conjugation than "Tú" or any of the other Spanish pronouns.

In regular AR verbs (like hablar), the suffix is -áis. As in "Vosotros habláis". ER = Vosotros corréis. IR = Vosotros vivís.

Also, if you're going to command someone to do something (As in "Tú, toma ese balón"), then you change the final R in an AR verb to a D

Tú = Tomar>Toma
Vosotros = Tomar>Tomad

It doesn't have have the same conjugation.

For example. "vos tomás", not "vos tomas". The command form is "tomá vos".

Lol well I'm basing all my assumptions on how the people I speak to use it (and those Mafalda comics). Most people tend not to use accents on MSN so I just saw both the conjugations as the same.

But good to know, thanks!

Español neutral – tú: hablas, comes, puedes, vives, eres, vienes
Uruguay (some regions) – tú: hablás, comés, podés, vivís, sos, venís
Argentina – vos: hablás, comés, podés, vivís, sos, venís
Venezuela – vos: habláis, coméis, podéis, vivís, sois, venîs
Chile – vos: hablái, coméi, podéi, vivís, sos, venís
Ladino – vos: fablásh, comésh, podésh, vivís, sosh, venís

Argentina – vos: hablás, comés, podés, vivís, sos, venís

this is the most common usage
since 90% of VOSusers are from Argentina

ps
i don't think the neutral usage is TU-VOSOTROS
I would opt for TU-USTEDES

TU-VOSOTROS system is not more used than VOS-USTEDES system

thanks so is conjugated differently than "tu"
like vos tenes
like tu tienes

tu eres
vos sos

but it's almost conjugated like tu

vos comes
tu comes

''but it's almost conjugated like tu

vos comes
tu comes''

it's VOS COMÉS
and not VOS COMES
(VOS COMES is used only by some Uruguayans who
don't follow the Argentinian usage)

I think he left out the accent because he's using an English keyboard.
Here are some common acecnts for all that don't have them, so you can type them in an English keyboard:

á =ALT+160
é = ALT+130
í = ALT+161
ó = ALT+162
ú = ALT+163

ñ = ALT+164
Ñ = ALT+165

¿ = ALT+168
¡ = ALT+173

The codes start at ALT+128 and follow through to ALT+173

The Chilean vos-conjugation is pretty simple since it has only two endings:
-ái and -ís where the s is aspirated.

Francisco's examples of Chilean voseo is not quite correct. It should be:
hablái, comÍS, podÍS, vivís, soI/ERÍS, venís

Saying "tú podís" is much more common than "vos podís".

I don't agree with Minnie. Vos is used in almost all countries in Latin America.

For the last poster, vos as it is used in Argentina (all the time, everywhere) is used only in Argentina and Uruguay (countries that have much in common in America, kind of like United States and Canada), since their demographics, dialect and culture is pretty much the same.

Sorry, I forgot to put my name. I was the poster before Lulu.

AFAIK, vos is also very widely accepted in Central American countries.

My Tico friends (from Costa Rica), never use tú. They say vos or usted instead.

Vos is only conjugated in the present, imperative and sometimes the subjunctive (see discussion in the use of vos in Argentina in the language forum). Most people who use voseo use the Argentinian way and it's considered standard in the RAE's conjugation tables. Colombia uses the Argentinian form.
Check the other discussion on vos, there are some interesting ideas.
Ian   Mon Nov 05, 2007 4:58 am GMT
In Chile, the vos conjugation is used in all moods and tenses. A main exception is imperative, where vos conjugation is rarely used.

Imperfecto de Indicativo:

Pretérito de Subjuntivo:
