Why "time" "costs" ?

Michele   Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:08 pm GMT
I was wondering why in german, english and dutch (to my knowledge) , you can refer to the action of waiting as something that "costs", like in the phrase:

<<How much time will it cost ?>>

while in latin languages is not so common. In italian there is the form "costerà un po' di tempo" to say it will take some time, but is not common at all.
In italian time usually is used with forms like:
"has to pass" or "will take" or "do I have to wait".

Just a curiosity.
Thanks

because americans are so crezy to get money, so they've invented that "time costs money".... and since then... everything/anything "costs", and not "take" anymore.

Probably that's why I didn't found the word "gratis" in En, but just "free of charge", or "no money" or something like that. They probably like to mention too much that fact "everything costs something"

:P

...just jokin'...

That could be one, dutch also say that time costs but "graatis" is a VERY used (and appreciated) word. Since dutch roots for sure influenced northern americans, we should wonder where the gratis word has finished...;-)

In which other languages time costs ?

Can we say in spanish "El tiempo cuesta" or something like this ?

With some friends we were speculating about protestant reform and the more light "Of course time costs when you wait in the cold"...but that wouldn't apply to northern americans of the south...;-)

Romanian: "timpul costa".
Could costs: money, resources, nervs... u name it :P

Indeed ""graatis" is a VERY used (and appreciated) word.", and there's no wonder why americans guys destroyed the "gratis" word. They just want... money, nothing else. :/

You're funny, you know that? You call me an American, when in fact you use American-slang words (i.e. Dude ). Stop jocking the Americans. La rivedere tabula rasa. Haha.

is the only way for you to understand me, because you know nothing else... dude. :B
