You take some thing for granted when you are sure said thing exists even though you have not checked if it actually does.

You also take some thing for granted when you are sure you will get said thing even though you have not checked if all conditions are met to get it.

It can also be used in regard to ignoring people or treating people badly too or not taking in their opinion. For example: "I took John for granted".

Someone makes an effort to be helpful and nice towards you, goes out of his/her way to do so, but all the while you accept it all without much, if any, recognition of the kindness/favour or whatever, or any acknowledgment or even gratitude. You take that person for granted as if it is his/her God given duty to run himself/herself into the ground for you but you offer no thanks in return.
