As said above, the discipline/ punishment system consists of power, subjectivity and surveillance. First of all, the power-knowledge relation plays a central role in constructing the system. It makes possible institutions exercising power to act as surveillance to police subjectivity. On the other hand, as mentioned previously, subjectivity is what individuals become when they are normalised by surveillance. In addition, it is not the body which is normalised, but the soul. Therefore, it can be argued the soul of individuals become subjectivity when institutions exercise power to limit it, and punish it when individuals commit crime. In other words, the soul is limited. In addition, the possible acts of the body are limited by the soul. In Cho’s case, probably due to the punishment to his soul, he had to kill himself as his body was limited by his soul. Therefore, as the discipline/ punishment system may be regarded as the prison of the soul, the soul, in Foucault’s (1977:30) words, “is the prison of the body”. In sum, the relationship between power, subjectivity and surveillance may be understood as they construct the prison in which the body is trapped.
