Vancouver vs Toronto accents

Hi everyone!
I didn't know that Vancouver and Toronto accents were THAT different...
I've read this article:

The author says Vancouver accent sounds funny to those who live in Toronto (and vice versa). Is it true?

I've never noticed this retraction before nasals. I've noticed that BC speakers seem to be less likely to use ae-tensing before nasals though, so maybe that's what the article means. I'm not from either Toronto or Vancouver, but I've never noticed enough of a difference between the two (or Ottawa, where I'm from) for one to sound 'funny' to the other.
