2 Things in Learning & Understanding Languages...?

Hello, I have 2 questions... Here they are...

1. Is it possible to learn & studie a language to only understand what is writin...?

2. Is it possible to learn & studie a language only by understanding what is being said to you...?



I wanna to studie French, but the pronounciation is like a hurrendouse kick in the mouth, so I only want to learn and and understand what is writin & spoken to me, or at least... understand whats being spoken to me, with out speaking it...

It's quite possible. I know a number of people (myself included), who can read or understand a foreign language quite well, but have great difficulties in speaking. Keep reading and listening (Internet audio, language CDs, movies).
